Trump Calls Mississippi Democrat Colom a 'Soros District Attorney'

President Donald Trump took his closing midterm push to Corinth, Mississippi, on Monday night and aimed most of his fire at Scott Colom, the Democratic district attorney trying to unseat Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith on November 3.

“I’m here today in Mississippi for a very special reason: to stop a Marxist, radical left, Soros district attorney from being elected to the United States Senate,” Trump told the crowd, according to video of the remarks posted on X by the Republican National Committee’s official account.

Trump also called Colom “a fake, a shameless phony who pretends to be a moderate,” NBC News reported in its live coverage of the rally. In a clip shared by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Trump told supporters that “the people of this state need to tell the radical Left Democrats that Mississippi is NOT sending a Soros communist to the Senate.”

Why Trump came to a state he won by 23 points

Mississippi is not normally a battleground. Trump carried the state by about 23 percentage points in 2024, according to NBC News. But the Hyde-Smith race has drawn unusual attention from Democrats this fall. NBC News reported that the Senate Democrats’ top super PAC announced a $1.2 million ad campaign in the state last week, and Mississippi Today reported that Kamala Harris campaigned for Colom in Columbus on October 22.

Polling suggests a closer race than the state’s voting history would predict. Newsweek reported that an October 21-22 poll by the Democratic firm Change Research for the 365 Project had Hyde-Smith at 43 percent and Colom at 40 percent. Newsweek also noted that all public polling in the race has come from Democratic-aligned firms and that polling averages still favor the incumbent.

Republicans are spending to protect the seat. The Hill reported that the Republican-aligned Senate Leadership Fund is spending more than $1 million to defend Hyde-Smith, and Newsweek reported that the group’s ad ties Colom to George Soros, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Colom shows up at the rally

Colom said earlier Monday that he planned to attend Trump’s rally himself. “I’m going to ask those voters what matters to them, because they actually deserve a senator that will listen to them,” Colom said, according to NBC News. “So I’m going to show up, and I’m going to listen.”

Trump, for his part, attacked Colom’s record as a district attorney and cast him as part of the “radical left,” according to NBC News.

What comes next

The Corinth stop is one of several in Trump’s final-week sprint for Republican candidates. NBC News reported that Trump is scheduled to travel to Texas, Ohio and Iowa later this week, while Vice President JD Vance campaigned Monday in Montana and Kansas.

For Republicans defending their Senate majority, there is little room for an upset in a state like Mississippi. Trump’s decision to spend one of his last pre-election nights there tells voters how seriously the White House is taking Colom’s challenge, and how much the party wants to keep a safe seat safe.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
