Daily Beltway is a small, independent newsroom with a clear point of view. That point of view never changes the facts. This page explains how we source stories, how we separate reporting from opinion, and what we do when we get something wrong.
Sourcing
- Stories start from a primary source: the original video or audio, an on-record statement, a court filing, a roll-call vote, an official document or a report from a named outlet. We embed or link the source in the article whenever it is publicly available.
- We name the people, agencies, campaigns and outlets involved. We do not run allegations from unnamed sources that we cannot independently confirm.
- Quotes are reproduced as spoken or written. Where we paraphrase, we say so.
- When a story is based on a social-media post, we verify the post is authentic and attribute it to the account that published it.
Reporting, analysis and opinion
Reporting states what happened and who said it. Analysis explains why it matters and what the record shows. Opinion argues a position and is published under the Opinion category. Headlines describe the story; they do not invent claims the article does not support.
How our work is produced
Every story is reported, written and edited by Tom McCullagh, who also records the video version. We use software tools in research and production — transcription, research assistance and drafting — and every article and video is reviewed by the editor before it is published. Nothing goes out unreviewed.
Corrections
- If we publish a factual error, we correct the article and add a note at the point of the correction describing what changed. Corrections to a video are made in its description and pinned comment, and in a follow-up where the error is material.
- To request a correction, email tom@dailybeltway.com with the article link and the error. We review every request and respond.
- Typos and formatting fixes that do not change the meaning of a story are made without a note.
Independence and funding
Daily Beltway is owned and operated by its founder. It accepts no money from political parties, campaigns or committees. It is funded by readers, advertising and merchandise sales. Sponsored content, if it ever appears, will be labeled as such.
