Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, suffered the worst single-day stock drop in its history on Thursday, with shares sinking 12.6% and wiping out about $500 billion in market value, according to NBC News.
The selloff followed Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings report, which showed the company did not make as much money as analysts had predicted, particularly in its advertising arm, the BBC reported. Shares fell to a six-month low after the results were released, according to the BBC.

Google’s own AI is eating into its ad business
The most striking admission came from the company itself. A senior Alphabet executive told investors Wednesday that part of the reason search ad revenue underperformed was Google’s own “AI Mode” search feature, which was resulting in fewer ads, NBC News reported.
The BBC reported that chief business officer Philipp Schindler said the feature, which answers questions conversationally, was eating into the money Google makes from ads that appear next to traditional search results. In other words, the product Google is betting its future on is cutting into the business that pays its bills.
The numbers were not all bad. Total revenue grew 25% in the three months to the end of September compared with the same period last year, reaching $127.6 billion, according to the BBC. But Wall Street was looking for more, and investors punished the miss.
Second-biggest wipeout in U.S. market history
NBC News reported that the value Alphabet shed in Thursday’s session ranks as the second-worst one-day wipeout in U.S. market history, trailing only Nvidia’s $589 billion drop in late January 2025. Before the drop, Alphabet was America’s fourth-largest company, according to NBC News.
By the end of Thursday, Alphabet’s total stock market value had fallen to $3.46 trillion from $3.97 trillion the day before, the BBC reported.
What it means for your 401(k)
Because Alphabet is one of the biggest companies in the country, its slide dragged the broader market down with it. The Nasdaq Composite closed down 1.38% and the S&P 500 fell about 0.3%, according to NBC News. Those indexes sit at the heart of the index funds and retirement accounts that millions of Americans depend on.
NBC News reported that the drop was also the latest sign of broader anxiety across Wall Street over how long big artificial intelligence companies will take to see consistent returns on investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
For ordinary investors, Thursday was a reminder that a stock market increasingly concentrated in a handful of Big Tech names can swing hard on a single earnings report, and that the AI spending race is now being judged on results rather than promises.
