Six-Year-Old Dawson Hazel Shields Sister During Brutal Knife Attack by Mother in South Carolina
A six-year-old boy in South Carolina is being hailed as a hero after shielding his three-year-old sister during a brutal knife attack carried out by their own mother. Dawson Hazel suffered injuries so severe that doctors are now considering amputation of fingers or possibly an entire arm, but his actions are credited with protecting his younger sister Hazel from even worse harm.
Deputies in Spartanburg County responded to a home on September 26 after receiving a call from the children’s grandmother. What they found inside was a scene of unimaginable violence. Both children were severely injured and covered in blood. Some of the lacerations were so deep they cut to the bone. Investigators estimate the children sustained approximately 50 stab wounds between them.

The children’s mother, 35-year-old Taylor Gosnell, is accused of attacking her son and daughter with a knife in the early morning hours while it was still dark outside. Deputies described the home as covered in blood, with shattered glass from destroyed televisions and mirrors scattered throughout the residence.
After the attack, Gosnell left the children alone in the home. The six-year-old boy contacted his grandmother to report that he was hungry. The grandmother and an ex-boyfriend of Gosnell then arrived at the home and immediately called police upon discovering the children’s condition.
Gosnell returned to the home shortly afterward, speaking rapidly and appearing distressed. She was placed in an ambulance for a mental health evaluation, but attempted to flee. Deputies were forced to handcuff her to the stretcher to prevent her escape.
Both children were placed in protective custody and transported to Greenville Children’s Hospital for treatment. The six-year-old’s injuries were described as particularly severe. Medical staff indicated he is facing the possibility of losing fingers or an arm due to the extent of the damage. Additional surgeries are expected as the children’s recovery continues.
Sheriff’s office officials stated they are committed to ensuring justice is delivered for the children. A spokesperson emphasized that deputies will do everything necessary to hold the responsible party accountable and ensure the investigation proceeds fully.
Gosnell is charged with two counts of attempted murder. She was denied bond during her initial court appearance. Records also show she has pending child endangerment charges dating back to 2024, raising serious questions about why the children remained in her care despite prior legal concerns.
A neighbor who lives near the home expressed shock that such violence occurred so close to her own family. She stated that she did not hear anything during the attack, but wished someone could have intervened to help the children. She voiced hope that Dawson and Hazel will be placed in a home where they are properly cared for and protected.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the six-year-old’s actions during the assault. According to his grandmother, Dawson positioned himself between his mother and his younger sister in an attempt to shield her from the attack. His injuries reflect the consequences of that decision, but officials and family members credit him with potentially saving his sister’s life.
Both children are now reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover while remaining in Spartanburg County. The focus of the investigation has shifted to ensuring Gosnell faces full accountability for the attack and determining what failures in the system allowed the situation to escalate to this point.
This tragedy highlights the dangers children can face even within their own households when warning signs are ignored or inadequately addressed. The earlier child endangerment charges against Gosnell represent a documented red flag that should have triggered intervention before violence of this magnitude occurred.
The actions of a six-year-old boy in the face of an attack by his own mother serve as a stark reminder of the courage children are sometimes forced to summon in circumstances no child should ever face. Dawson Hazel’s name is now associated with an act of protection that came at tremendous personal cost, and the republic must ensure the system that failed to protect him and his sister is held to account.
