Vance Says Fake-MAGA Heckler 'Told on Himself' at Ohio GOP Rally

Vice President JD Vance was interrupted Wednesday at a Republican midterm rally in Sharonville, Ohio, when a man seated directly behind him on stage stood up, pulled off a red MAGA hat and began shouting, according to the Dayton Daily News. Security quickly removed the man, the paper reported.

The rally at the Sharonville Convention Center, outside Cincinnati, was held to support Ohio GOP candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 election, the Dayton Daily News reported. Vance took the stage just after 1 p.m., and the disruption came within minutes, according to the paper.

Vance was making the case against Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman, who faces Republican Eric Conroy in Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, when the interruption happened, according to an account syndicated on Yahoo News. Vance said Landsman would “raise your taxes” and “bring us back to the highest inflation in 40 years,” that account reported.

The man, wearing a suit, shouted an accusation tied to the Jeffrey Epstein files and threw his hat to the ground, according to the Yahoo News account. The crowd answered with boos and chants of “USA,” the account said.

“He told on himself”

Vance did not let the moment pass. “Now that guy, he was trying to pretend to be MAGA. Do you notice how he took off his ‘Make America Great Again’ hat and threw it down?” Vance said, according to video of the remarks posted on X by TheBlaze. “Here’s the problem, ladies and gentlemen. He told on himself.”

Vance then joked that it was “very obvious that he has not washed his hair in about three months,” adding, “We all know that the people who haven’t washed their hair in three months, they vote for Democrats, not Republicans,” according to the same video and the Yahoo News account.

The rally then continued, according to the Dayton Daily News, with Vance turning to the Ohio governor’s race.

A pattern on the trail

Wednesday’s disruption was the second in three days. At a Monday event in North Carolina, another protester shouted “Release the Epstein files!” and Vance joked that the country had now seen one illegal border crossing, according to the Yahoo News account.

The Ohio rally also featured Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Jon Husted and Conroy, according to the Dayton Daily News. Ramaswamy used his time to talk up steel production, a zero income tax rate, lower electric bills and lower property taxes, the paper reported.

The man who interrupted Vance was not named in early reports. Critics on the left argued Vance should have engaged with the Epstein question rather than mocking the protester, the Yahoo News account said. Many conservatives online saw something else: a staged stunt from someone dressed as a Trump supporter that the vice president spotted and shut down in seconds.

With less than two weeks until Election Day, Vance has been crisscrossing battleground districts for GOP candidates, and hecklers have become a regular feature of those stops. So far, his strategy has been the same each time: let security do its job, take a shot at the disruption, and get back to the stump speech.
