DeSantis: Midterm Losses 'Close to an Extinction-Level Event' for GOP

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis delivered one of the bluntest Republican assessments yet of Tuesday’s midterm results, calling the party’s losses “close to an extinction-level event for Republicans across the country” during a Wednesday morning press conference in Tallahassee, according to Politico.

DeSantis warned that the damage would last well beyond the next two years and could reverberate for a decade or more, and he said most Republicans did not expect results this bad, Politico reported.

The Washington Times reported that DeSantis said the Senate losses will make it difficult for Republicans to retake the chamber in two years, and that he said the House is likely out of reach as well. The Washington Times reported that he described the outcome as about the worst-case scenario for a midterm election.

“A meteor strike”

In remarks aired by Fox News on Wednesday, DeSantis pushed back on calling the results a simple wave. “To call it a wave would, I don’t think would be fully accurate. It’s the political equivalent of a meteor strike,” he said in a clip posted by Fox News on X.

DeSantis also warned that Republicans could be shut out of unified control in Washington for years. “You are not, as Republicans, going to be able to retake the Senate under this current” map, he said, according to a separate Fox News clip, which reported that he sees the consequences potentially stretching well beyond the 2028 presidential election.

Florida as the exception

The governor pointed to his own state as the major exception to the national results, Fox News reported. Politico reported that Florida Republicans fended off the blue wave on Tuesday while Democrats across the country flipped long-held red seats and took control of Congress.

In another clip posted by Fox News, DeSantis touted his record in Florida and the coalition Republicans have built there, and said political leadership should be measured by results. “Elected officials are supposed to be servants,” he said.

DeSantis’s comments come as Republicans begin sorting out who will lead the party in Washington. House Speaker Mike Johnson told staff Wednesday that he will not run for House minority leader, according to NBC News, CBS News and Politico.

For conservative voters, DeSantis’s message was a warning and a pitch at once: that the national party faces a long climb back, and that Florida’s results show Republicans can still win with a record to run on. His comments are likely to draw attention as the party looks ahead to 2028, though DeSantis did not announce any plans of his own in the remarks reported Wednesday.
