Trump Says He Knows Nothing of Envoy's Weekend Iran Strike Talk

President Trump on Friday distanced himself from a remark by his own ambassador to Turkey that a U.S. military strike on Iran could come as soon as this weekend, telling reporters he knew nothing about it.

Asked by a reporter about Ambassador Tom Barrack saying there “absolutely” could be a strike on Iran this weekend, and whether he had backed off his pledge to hold off until after the midterms, Trump answered, “That was my ambassador to Turkey? He’s a pretty powerful man, I guess. Well, if that’s the case, I don’t know anything about it,” according to video of the exchange posted by Fox News and other outlets on X.

The remarks came as Trump spoke with reporters before leaving the White House for Florida, where Fox News reported he was headed to a rally in Fort Myers.

What Barrack said

Barrack, who also serves as the U.S. special envoy to Syria and Iraq, made the comment in an interview with online commentator Mario Nawfal, according to The Times of Israel. “Could there be a strike this weekend? Absolutely,” Barrack said, as quoted by The Times of Israel and Kurdistan24.

In the same interview, Barrack stressed that diplomacy remains the president’s preferred path. “The president is very clear. He’s open and available and accessible to a deal. And we’ve been at the table for months and months and months,” he said, according to The Times of Israel.

Barrack described the talks as a bargain over “unfreezing assets, releasing sanctions, no more kinetic engagement, supplying the needed help to Israel, our ally,” The Times of Israel reported. He called the nuclear enrichment questions “details, the punctuation in the chapter that needs to be finished,” according to the same report.

He also warned Tehran that there would be “a consequence” if it keeps “threatening the world, our allies, the Gulf,” but said that consequence would not be regime change, according to Kurdistan24. “The problem with regime change always is, what’s the day two scenario?” Barrack said, as quoted by Kurdistan24.

Trump’s midterm pledge

Barrack’s comment cut against what the president said publicly earlier this month. On Oct. 8, Trump said in a social media post that the U.S. “will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd,” according to the Associated Press. In that same post, Trump said his team had been “having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the AP reported.

The Times of Israel noted that Barrack is known for speaking publicly about Middle East developments, which it called a rarity for a sitting U.S. official, and said it is often unclear whether his comments reflect administration policy or his own views.

The outlet also reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this week that he stressed to Trump, in a recent call, the need to bring down the Iranian regime.

Where things stand

As of Friday afternoon, the White House had not announced any change to the president’s stated position on Iran, and Trump’s answer on camera indicated he was not aware of any weekend operation. The episode puts a spotlight on the gap between an outspoken envoy and a commander in chief who has made clear he controls the timing, and who has kept the door open to a deal while warning Tehran of consequences.
