Jeanine John Tale, 38, of Downey, California, was taken into custody on July 31 after authorities observed him photographing and recording security measures while wearing an earpiece in the hours before President Trump’s arrival at the course. Federal prosecutors charged Tale with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Additional state charges are expected as the investigation continues.
During a preliminary hearing before Judge John Lonergan in Los Angeles, Tale appeared in a suicide smock and entered a not guilty plea. The judge did not mince words about the gravity of the allegations.

Tale is being held on $250,000 bail while the FBI, Secret Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives work to determine his full motive. Investigators have not publicly commented on whether additional threats were planned or if other individuals were involved.
The case underscores the persistent security challenges facing the President and First Lady, particularly at private properties where security perimeters are more difficult to establish and maintain than at official government facilities.
