War Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Saturday that Iran will soon have to choose between giving up its nuclear ambitions in negotiations or facing swift American military force, according to remarks he delivered to ROTC cadets and military recruits at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
“Iran’s going to have a choice to make real quick about whether they’re going to give those up at the table or face the kind of devastation that America can bring and will bring swiftly if necessary,” Hegseth said, according to Anadolu Agency and TRT World, which both reported the remarks Saturday. A clip of the comments was posted on X by the War Department’s rapid response account, @DOWResponse.

Hegseth did not announce a deadline or describe any specific military plans, according to the published accounts of his remarks from Anadolu Agency and TRT World.
Missiles, proxies and deterrence
Hegseth accused Tehran of building a large conventional missile arsenal to deter military action while it pursues nuclear ambitions, according to Anadolu Agency. He argued that American military strength is what forces adversaries to negotiate, the agency reported.
He also said Iran “funds the proxies in Hezbollah, funds the proxies in the Houthis in Yemen,” adding that Washington has worked to deter attacks on U.S. forces and commercial shipping, according to Anadolu Agency and TRT World.
Hegseth framed the Iran policy as part of President Trump’s broader push to reassert American power, including confronting drug cartels and limiting the influence of Iran, China and Russia in Latin America, according to TRT World. He said the U.S. operation in Venezuela would have “generational implications,” the outlet reported.
‘Peace through strength’
The Knoxville visit was a stop on Hegseth’s Send Me Tour, according to a War Department video of the event. Before attending the Tennessee-Alabama football game at Neyland Stadium, Hegseth administered the oath of enlistment to recruits from every service branch and the Tennessee National Guard, according to Pentagon News, the War Department’s official news service.
“If there’s one entity that should win the Nobel Peace Prize every single year, it actually should be the United States military,” Hegseth told the cadets, according to Pentagon News. “Peace through strength: the reason our people live free, the reason we get to play football games like this one today, are because we are stronger than any other nation in the world.”
Hegseth told the cadets that graduates of the university’s ROTC program are likely serving at the Strait of Hormuz, on the U.S. southern border or in Europe, and said “no doubt, you will soon be in one of those types of places,” according to Pentagon News.
He described the military’s role in the government’s four instruments of national power as the foundation for diplomacy and economic leverage. “You are in the ‘M’ business,” he said, according to Pentagon News. “When you are strong, and you are prepared, and you are lethal, and you are ready, everything else falls into place.”
Hegseth also repeated what he called the War Department’s three core principles since he took office in January 2025: “restore the warrior ethos, rebuild the military, reestablish deterrence,” according to Pentagon News.
