Sheriff: Suspect, Victim Dead in 'Targeted' Attack at Tampa Citibank

Two people are dead, including the suspect, after what the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office called an “active threat” at Citibank’s sprawling office campus in Brandon, just east of Tampa, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

“HCSO can confirm the suspect involved in the Citibank Active Threat scene is deceased. There is also one confirmed deceased victim,” the sheriff’s office said in a post on X timestamped 1:34 p.m. Eastern. Sheriff Chad Chronister posted to X that preliminary details indicate the shooting was “a targeted incident,” Patch reported.

Deputies responded to the Citibank Center in the Sabal Park business area near Falkenburg Road shortly after noon, prompting a large law enforcement response that included SWAT personnel, according to Patch. Spectrum Bay News 9 reported that deputies responded to the active threat around 12:30 p.m. and that several ambulances were pulling up to the scene just after 1:30 p.m.

Fox News reported that an emergency alert told anyone in or near the area to “SHELTER IN PLACE immediately,” lock their doors and stay away from windows. Chronister at first said one person had been taken into custody before saying that person was dead, according to Fox News.

Authorities have not disclosed how the suspect and the victim died, Fox News reported. Witnesses described a shooting on the campus, according to the Associated Press, as reported by Patch. The identities of the victim and the suspect, and any motive, had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Patch.

Television video showed long lines of workers streaming out of the complex, which employs thousands of people in the Tampa area, Patch reported, citing the Associated Press. The campus includes four three-story office buildings, according to Patch.

A Spectrum Bay News 9 reporter said she spoke with one woman who was badly shaken and said people ran from the scene, the outlet reported.

Citi said in a statement to Spectrum Bay News 9: “We are aware of an incident impacting our site in Tampa, Florida and are coordinating with law enforcement.”

The sheriff’s office said in a 2:05 p.m. update on X that deputies were still actively clearing the scene. Families can reunite with employees at the Staybridge Suites Tampa East at 3624 North Falkenburg Road, the sheriff’s office said. Employees were earlier directed to a triage area in the parking lot of the Sheraton Tampa Brandon Hotel, according to Fox News.

The sheriff’s office urged the public to avoid the area around Falkenburg Road, Princess Palm Avenue and Queen Palm Drive while crews remained on scene, according to Patch.

Daily Beltway will update this story as the sheriff’s office releases more information.
