Four Dead, 15 Hurt in Three Deep Ellum Shootings After Halloween

Four people were killed and about 15 others were injured in three separate shootings in Dallas’ Deep Ellum entertainment district early Sunday, as Halloween crowds packed the neighborhood’s bars and clubs, according to the Dallas Police Department.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux laid out the toll at a Sunday morning news briefing. “Right now, in total, we have four people that are deceased from three separate scenes, and we have approximately 15 others that have been injured,” Comeaux said, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. He said the number of injured could still change because several victims took themselves to hospitals.

The gunfire broke out over roughly an hour. According to a preliminary police investigation reported by The Dallas Morning News, the first shooting happened at about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, the second at about 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, and the third at about 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.

CBS News Texas reported that police said five people were shot in a convenience store parking lot in an apparent altercation, and that three people were killed in gunfire near Commerce and South Crowdus streets.

Police: no link established yet

Comeaux said investigators had not found evidence that the three shootings were connected. “At this time, we have no information that they are related, but we’re still doing an investigation to try to figure that out at this time,” he said, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

The chief said police had arrested some people and were interviewing them, along with witnesses, while they searched for additional suspects, according to The Dallas Morning News. CBS News Texas reported that one suspect was taken into custody, though it wasn’t immediately clear which shooting that suspect was tied to. Police have not publicly identified any suspect, released the names of the victims, or described a motive.

FOX 4 reported that Comeaux called the violence “completely unacceptable.” The department said no officers were hurt.

Extra patrols were already on the street

Comeaux said the department had increased its presence in Deep Ellum because Halloween fell on a Saturday night, and that it held planning meetings in the weeks leading up to the holiday, The Dallas Morning News reported. He credited officers who were positioned less than two blocks away and ran toward the gunfire, saying their lifesaving efforts revived at least one victim, according to FOX 4.

Investigators plan to canvass businesses door to door for surveillance video, and police are asking anyone who was in Deep Ellum overnight and recorded photos or video to share them with the department, according to FOX 4 and NBC 5.

CBS News Texas noted the shootings came about six months after another shooting in Deep Ellum killed a security officer and wounded five others.

The Dallas violence was among several deadly shootings across the country over the Halloween weekend, the Associated Press reported. In Birmingham, Alabama, police said one person was killed and eight were wounded outside Legion Field after Saturday’s Magic City Classic football game, according to CBS News.
