One video showed Border Patrol agents conducting a spot check at a home renovation project in the Lakeview neighborhood one week before Halloween. Agents approached the property, prompting a community protest outside. One man was detained and released three weeks later. The commission plans to collect testimony, videos, bodycam footage, and other evidence through public hearings and submissions. Denise Lawrence testified before the commission. Her daughter Katie Abraham was killed in January of last year by an immigrant without permanent legal status. The Trump administration cited Abraham’s death as justification for the Midway Blitz. Lawrence expressed anger that her daughter’s name was being used, stating the Trump administration used Katie’s name only for political gain. She claimed Katie’s father had permitted the use of her daughter’s name, but she was never consulted.
The commission exists to do what no other body has yet done—gather evidence of federal misconduct, examine it rigorously, and present it publicly. The panel meets again tomorrow and Thursday, when it will issue formal recommendations to Governor Pritzker on preventing similar federal actions in the future.
