Pritzker Launches Commission to Investigate Trump ICE Raids After Thousands Arrested in Chicago Area

Date:

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has launched what he calls a first-of-its-kind commission to investigate the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operation in Chicago last fall.

The Illinois Accountability Commission held its initial hearing this week, targeting the so-called Midway Blitz that resulted in thousands of arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants in the Windy City.

The commission’s stated purpose is to gather evidence of federal misconduct during the ICE and Border Patrol operation. Pritzker devised the panel specifically to hold the Trump administration accountable for what commission members labeled a military occupation of Chicago. Never-before-seen bodycam footage and testimony were presented during the hearing.

One video showed Border Patrol agents conducting a spot check at a home renovation project in the Lakeview neighborhood one week before Halloween. Agents approached the property, prompting a community protest outside. One man was detained and released three weeks later. The commission plans to collect testimony, videos, bodycam footage, and other evidence through public hearings and submissions. It can refer information about alleged violations and crimes to law enforcement agencies.

Denise Lawrence testified before the commission. Her daughter Katie Abraham was killed in January of last year by an immigrant without permanent legal status. The Trump administration cited Abraham’s death as justification for the Midway Blitz. Lawrence expressed anger that her daughter’s name was being used, stating the Trump administration used Katie’s name only for political gain. She claimed Katie’s father had permitted the use of her daughter’s name, but she was never consulted.

The commission exists to do what no other body has yet done—gather evidence of federal misconduct, examine it rigorously, and present it publicly. The panel meets again tomorrow and Thursday, when it will issue formal recommendations to Governor Pritzker on preventing similar federal actions in the future.

This development highlights a sharp partisan divide over immigration enforcement. Federal authorities under President Trump have prioritized deporting criminal illegal aliens and protecting American communities. These actions have drastically reduced illegal border crossings and related crime. Illinois Democrats appear intent on framing routine law enforcement as misconduct.

Chicago has long been a sanctuary city, resisting federal immigration efforts and sheltering individuals who entered the country illegally. Critics argue this policy endangers residents. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and Border Patrol, has not responded to inquiries about the hearing.

Proponents of strict immigration policies view the commission as a political stunt. The move signals how Democrats might weaponize investigations against Trump officials if they regain power. With the nation safer due to the administration’s immigration crackdown, such probes risk prioritizing open-borders activism over law and order.

The sweeping federal raids conducted by ICE and Border Patrol targeted illegal immigrants amid rising concerns over public safety. Thousands of arrests and deportations resulted from the operation. Commission members framed the enforcement as chaos, but supporters see it as necessary action to protect American citizens.

The Illinois Accountability Commission’s work continues, but its recommendations are unlikely to deter the federal government’s commitment to securing the homeland. The commission represents an unprecedented effort by a state government to investigate and potentially criminalize federal immigration enforcement carried out under lawful authority.

Conservatives warn this is a preview of what Democrats will do if they win another election. They will investigate and potentially arrest everyone in the Trump administration for enforcing immigration laws. The republic is one election away from Democrats turning law enforcement into political persecution.
