Schumer Vows to End Iran War, Wrap Trump in 'Legislative Razor Wire'

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, set to become majority leader in January, came out swinging Wednesday, vowing that his new majority will push to end the war in Iran and box in President Trump with what he called “legislative razor wire,” according to the New York Post.

Speaking at a press conference at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Washington, Schumer said Democrats will use Congress’s control of government funding to pressure the administration, according to AFP, as reported by Middle East Eye. “This war must end. It must end,” Schumer said, according to Middle East Eye’s account of the AFP report.

Schumer argued that voters do not understand the mission. “The American people don’t know what the heck we’re fighting for in Iran,” he said, according to the New York Post, adding that the president “changes his mind day to day and minute to minute.”

According to Middle East Eye, Schumer described the “power of the purse” as “one of the ways of deterring a president who does war without the consent of the American people.” JBizNews, citing Fox News, reported that Schumer declined to rule out withholding the defense budget as leverage. That outlet stressed it was a refusal to take the option off the table, not an announced funding cut.

Investigations and court fights promised

Schumer also previewed an aggressive oversight posture. “Whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court, and entangle him in legislative razor wire,” he said in video of the remarks posted on X. “The days of Trump’s supplicant Senate are over.”

According to the New York Post, Schumer called the president “corrupt” and a “wannabe king,” and warned Republicans that “if they continue to embrace Trump, they’re going to be following him right over the cliff, as this election has shown, and it’ll get even worse for them.”

The Post reported that Democrats gained at least seven seats in the upper chamber in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Schumer opened the press conference by declaring, “Against all odds, Democrats have won the Senate, and we have five words for the American people: Relief is on the way,” according to JBizNews, citing Fox News.

Promises, not policy, for now

For all the tough talk, nothing Schumer described Wednesday has been put into law. JBizNews reported that no legislation has been introduced or passed and that the new Congress does not convene until January, meaning Republicans still hold the Senate gavel through the lame-duck session.

Schumer also faces questions inside his own caucus. According to JBizNews, he predicted “I will be reelected” as caucus leader, brushing aside Senators-elect Troy Jackson and Abdul El-Sayed, who have said they will not vote for him. The caucus has not yet voted, the outlet noted.

JBizNews, citing Fox News, reported that Schumer said he has not spoken with Trump since the election and pledged to deliver on affordability “with or without Trump.” He stayed silent when asked whether the Senate would work on prosecuting members of the Trump administration, according to the same report.

The remarks set up the first major fights of the next Congress over prices, corruption investigations and Iran war funding, JBizNews reported, with Schumer’s majority taking over when lawmakers are sworn in next year.
