Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens has asked the U.S. Marshals Service for protection after receiving death threats over her endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race, according to two senior Trump administration officials who spoke to Axios on Tuesday.
One of those officials told Axios that Stevens had received death threats and contacted the Marshals Service, and said that while there is a process to go through, the administration expects the request to be granted because she is a member of Congress, as reported by Axios and Times Now. Axios reported that Stevens could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The request comes on Election Day, two days after Stevens broke with her party in one of the most closely watched Senate contests in the country. On Sunday, Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit and then announced her endorsement in a video posted to social media, according to VINnews.
In that video, Stevens said El-Sayed had told her she was no longer welcome in his campaign, that she agreed she did not belong there, and that she does not stand with progressive streamer Hasan Piker, VINnews reported.
A hostile message at her district office
The threats are not only online. Deadline Detroit reported Tuesday that a message targeting Stevens, signed “Michigan Dems,” was written on a bathroom stall door in the building that houses her Farmington Hills office. The message was discovered Monday, one day after the endorsement, according to an attorney in the building who spoke to the outlet.
Farmington Hills Assistant Police Chief Brian Moore told Deadline Detroit that officers went to the building Monday and that the incident was being investigated as vandalism because it did not appear to be a direct threat against the congresswoman. It has not been established who wrote the message.
How the split happened
Stevens lost the August Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, according to Times Now. The outlet reported that Israel was a major dividing line between the two, and that Stevens objected to El-Sayed’s ties to Piker and to an ad from a PAC linked to Piker’s uncle, Cenk Uygur, that blamed Israel for rising grocery prices. El-Sayed disavowed the ad, but Stevens said he had not done enough to address her concerns, Times Now reported.
The backlash from her own party was swift. According to VINnews, Senate Democratic leadership condemned the move, the Michigan Democratic Party chair said Stevens is no longer a member of the state party, her photo was removed from the party website, and her access to the party’s voter database was revoked. Times Now reported that her top staff members resigned after the endorsement.
Stevens has said she remains a Democrat and that her endorsement was a personal decision limited to this race, VINnews reported. Rogers said he was honored by her support, according to the same report.
What it means
For a party that has spent years warning about threats to democracy, the episode is an uncomfortable one: a sitting Democratic congresswoman now says she needs federal protection after crossing her own side in a single race. The Michigan Senate contest is widely viewed as pivotal to control of the chamber, VINnews noted, and Michigan voters are casting their ballots Tuesday.
