Trump Puts Kansas and Iowa Rallies Back On for Sunday

President Donald Trump will hold back-to-back campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday after his team called off both trips a day earlier, according to an Associated Press report published by KWCH 12 News in Wichita. The AP cited a person familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the president’s schedule.

The reversal came less than a day after the Republican National Committee said Trump would skip the in-person stops and hold tele-rallies instead, according to NBC News. The RNC said in a news release that the change was meant to maximize “opportunities for President Donald J. Trump to speak to voters across the country,” NBC News reported.

According to the AP report, the person familiar with the new plans said the Iowa and Kansas rallies were rearranged to make room for the tele-rallies that had been added to Trump’s schedule, so the in-person events and the phone rallies will now both go ahead. KWCH reported that the Kansas rally is now set for Sunday, with the time and location still pending, and that the station had asked the RNC to confirm the details.

The original plan called for a Saturday rally in a hangar at the Salina airport, KWCH reported. NBC News reported that the Iowa stop would have been in Dubuque, in the state’s contested 2nd Congressional District.

Both states hold races Republicans are working to protect in the final stretch before Tuesday’s midterm elections. NBC News reported that Senate races in Kansas and Iowa are considered toss-ups, and that Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas is locked in a tight race with Democrat Adam Hamilton.

When the trips were first scrapped, Trump said he didn’t “feel I have to go to Kansas” and that he thought Marshall “is doing well,” according to NBC News. Iowa GOP operatives told NBC News that tele-rallies would help turnout but that an in-person visit would have been more valuable. “A tele-rally will be helpful in boosting turnout, but an in-person rally would have been really helpful,” one operative told the network.

Trump has held 25 rallies over the past month, NBC News reported, as part of a midterm blitz in which he said he would travel to 35 places to drive Republican turnout. Two White House officials told NBC News that Trump aims to hold “more than 20” tele-rallies before Election Day.

Trump is still scheduled to campaign Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida, for Republican Rep. Randy Fine and Sen. Ashley Moody, according to NBC News. The Sunday rallies in Kansas and Iowa would put him back in front of voters in the heartland two days before polls close.
