Trump in Port Huron: I'm Here to Keep El-Sayed Out of the Senate

President Donald Trump brought his midterm push to Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday and made the state’s U.S. Senate race the centerpiece of his message, telling the rally crowd that Democrat Abdul El-Sayed must not reach the Senate, according to The Independent.

“I’m here to keep a Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator,” Trump said, according to The Independent. El-Sayed has vehemently denied any ties to the organization, the outlet reported, and he disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood at a recent town hall in Caro, Michigan, after an attendee asked him to.

Trump went further, saying El-Sayed “should never be allowed inside the halls of our great, beautiful Capitol building in Washington, D.C.,” The Independent reported. “He would be the only senator that will have to go through a metal detector before he’s allowed to go into the Senate. I want him to have a metal detector,” Trump said, according to the same report. He added that if El-Sayed wins, “he would have access to our nation’s most closely guarded national security secrets, and his vote would wield power over our military, our borders, our homeland security.”

El-Sayed has answered the loyalty question directly. “I’m gonna swear an oath to the Constitution of the United States,” he said at the Caro town hall, according to The Independent, adding that the Constitution guarantees the right to practice whatever faith a person wants or none at all.

Republican nominee Mike Rogers, a former FBI agent and former congressman, pressed the same line from the stage before Trump spoke. “He’s accepted campaign donations from organizations, as I said, and even the literal spokesmen from the Muslim Brotherhood,” Rogers said, according to Mediaite. “As a former FBI agent, I can tell you, we would call that a clue.” Mediaite noted that the donation claims trace to a Washington Free Beacon review of campaign finance records, and that El-Sayed has not publicly addressed individual donations.

The race is close. A new Marist poll shows El-Sayed at 50 percent and Rogers at 48 percent among Michigan likely voters, according to The Independent.

The setting carried its own message. Port Huron sits across the St. Clair River from Canada, and the rally was the first presidential visit ever to Port Huron and St. Clair County, according to FOX 2 Detroit, citing the City of Port Huron.

Trump made the border case from the stage. “We achieved the most secure border in American history and in the past 17 months, zero illegal aliens have been admitted into the United States,” he said, in a clip posted by the White House’s Rapid Response account on X. He also pointed to new investment in the state, saying Stellantis is building a $400 million factory in Michigan, Ford is putting $3 billion into Central Michigan, and GM is investing billions to bring production back to Detroit, according to the same account.

On defense, Trump said Michigan is getting 21 new F-15EX Eagle II jets for Selfridge Air National Guard Base and claimed Democrats had been closing the base before he saved it, according to a Rapid Response post on X.

Democrats are pressing just as hard. Former President Barack Obama campaigned for El-Sayed in Detroit on Saturday, telling supporters, “Abdul is fighting for change, real change, change that will bring an end to this war,” according to The Independent.

Election Day is Nov. 3, nine days away, and Michigan’s open Senate seat could help decide which party controls the chamber.
