A man in his 30s was shot and killed on the northbound E train platform at the 53rd Street–Seventh Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, and the gunman is still on the loose. The New York Police Department says the shooter fled on foot and has not been arrested.
The shooting happened at about 12:21 p.m. Saturday after an argument between the victim and the suspect on the platform. The dispute moved onto a northbound E train and then back onto the platform, where the fatal shots were fired. Police said the victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
The suspect was described as wearing a red hoodie, red pants, a black vest, and a black mask. He ran north on Seventh Avenue after the shooting. The NYPD issued a wanted notice urging anyone with information to contact them directly or call 1-800-577-TIPS.

Subway service was disrupted in the area as a result of the incident. Uptown E trains are being rerouted onto the F line between West Fourth Street and Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue. Uptown C and D trains are bypassing the Seventh Avenue station.
The killing unfolded on a busy Saturday in one of Manhattan’s most trafficked transit hubs. Commuters and bystanders were forced to witness emergency responders working on the victim on the platform. Eyewitness video shows first responders performing CPR on the victim as police secured the scene. The footage captures the chaos and urgency of the response, with officers directing bystanders to move slowly and clear the area.
The episode adds to a pattern of violent confrontations inside New York City’s subway system, where arguments can quickly turn deadly and suspects often escape into the streets before police arrive. Authorities continue to search for the gunman while reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts. The station remains a focal point for investigators, and service adjustments are expected to remain in place until the scene is cleared.
This marks yet another instance of a public transit dispute escalating to lethal violence in a city where subway safety has become a flashpoint for political debate. Democratic leadership in New York has faced criticism for policies that critics say prioritize leniency over accountability, allowing repeat offenders and unstable individuals to roam freely on the subway system. The shooter in this case remains unidentified and unapprehended, raising questions about what prior encounters he may have had with law enforcement and whether earlier intervention could have prevented this killing.
The NYPD continues to ask the public for help in identifying and locating the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD Tips line. The investigation remains active.
