California Families Flee As Newsom Funds Illegal Immigrants Over Working Americans In State Crisis

Watch the full Daily Beltway report

California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing mounting criticism for policy choices that appear to prioritize illegal immigrants over struggling working families as the state bleeds residents who can no longer afford to live there.

California now carries the highest cost of living in the nation. Prices run 11 percent above the national average. Housing, food, and gas have become unaffordable for families who work for a living.

Many are leaving. They are not leaving because they want to. They are leaving because they have no choice.

Newsom has acknowledged the pressure. He admits people are struggling with rent and home purchases. He says it is hard to start a family in California.

Yet while working families pack up and leave, Newsom continues to fund programs that support illegal immigrants with state resources. Critics say any recent population gains come not from productive citizens moving in, but from illegal immigration inflows that his administration has actively supported.

The result is a state where taxpayers bear the burden of higher costs while resources flow to non-citizens. Housing shortages persist. Energy costs remain elevated due to regulatory and tax policies. Relief for native-born residents remains absent.

Newsom has defended his record by pointing to economic indicators. He claims California has moved from the sixth to the fourth largest economy in the world. He touts dominance in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and agriculture.

He has highlighted specific measures. California capped insulin at $11. The state has the lowest uninsured rate in the country at 6.4 percent. Newsom says California subsidizes more than 300,000 childcare slots, more than any other state.

Those programs have not stopped the exodus. Families continue to leave because they cannot afford the basics. Housing, food, and fuel are out of reach. High taxes compound the problem.

The contrast is clear. Newsom celebrates economic strength while working residents flee. He funds illegal immigration while taxpayers struggle. He announces subsidies while families pack moving trucks.

California residents who met reporters in Nashville said they left because they could not afford rent or buy a home. They wanted to start a family. California made that impossible.

Their story is not unique. Hundreds of thousands have made the same decision. They have chosen to leave the state where they were born or built careers because the cost of staying became unbearable.

Newsom’s policies have created a two-tier system. One tier receives state funding and support despite having no legal right to be in the country. The other tier pays taxes, follows the law, and gets priced out of their own communities.

This is not sustainable. A state cannot thrive when productive workers leave and dependents arrive. Economic indicators ring hollow when the people who generate that economy cannot afford to live there.

California’s crisis is a policy choice. Newsom has chosen to prioritize illegal immigrants over citizens. He has chosen regulatory burdens over affordability. He has chosen to tout statistics while ignoring the human cost.

Working families are voting with their feet. They are moving to states where their paychecks go further and their work is valued. They are leaving California behind.

Newsom can celebrate all he wants. The people he is supposed to serve are gone.
