Chicago’s Billion-Dollar Violence Scam: How Democrats Fund Gang Members With Your Tax Money

Chicago remains America’s murder capital, but Democrats have found a way to make billions from the bloodshed. Over the past decade, taxpayers and liberal billionaires have poured more than $1 billion into so-called “violence interrupter” programs that hire gang members to stop gang violence. The results? At least 28 program participants arrested for serious crimes, including murder.

The scheme involves hiring former gang members as “peacekeepers” to mediate disputes and prevent shootings. These individuals receive up to $600 weekly in taxpayer-funded stipends. The program is championed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who has White House ambitions for 2028, and funded by liberal elites including Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs’ billionaire widow.

The corruption runs deep. Six days after posing for photos with Governor Pritzker, peacekeeper Kellon McMiller was arrested for a brazen Louis Vuitton smash-and-grab robbery that killed an innocent bystander. McMiller rammed a pickup truck through the store’s facade, stole nearly $700,000 in merchandise, and fled in getaway vehicles. One car crashed, unaliving Mark Carlo Arsetta on his way to work. McMiller faced murder, burglary, and theft charges while already carrying four active warrants.

This wasn’t isolated. Investigation reveals dozens of arrests involving people identifying as peacekeepers or violence interrupters over three years. Many participants admit joining solely for the paycheck, with one-third of workers showing up just to collect stipends without doing actual work.

The money trail exposes systematic fraud. Activist Navigator, a state-paid oversight organization with a $13.5 million budget, funnels grants to dubious recipients. Tax filings list residential addresses as nonprofit headquarters. One “organization” received nearly $200,000 despite operating from a house with broken doorbells and no violence prevention activity. Another consulting firm, incorrectly labeled as a nonprofit, pocketed half a million dollars from an apartment building where neighbors reported no community work.

Project Hoods, supported by Chicago Cred donations, blew $132,000 in state funds on Apple Store shopping sprees, Costco vodka, and $3,750 worth of tacos. When confronted, officials dismissed these as “wrong receipts” and promised repayment.

Chicago Cred, founded by Powell Jobs and former Obama Education Secretary Arne Duncan, pioneered this model in 2016. The nonprofit has funneled millions into violence intervention programs while claiming success based on Northwestern University studies it funded with $1.4 million. However, researchers clarify their studies show correlation, not causation, and violence drops are part of broader trends unrelated to peacekeepers.

“It’s a fraud. It’s a scam. Because they have stories of how they have been locking up an interruptor or dealing with an interruptor who has hindered an investigation.” – Alderman Ray Lopez

Conservatives warned against this defund-the-police model for years. Progressive politicians in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York reallocate public safety roles from trained police officers to unaccountable nonprofit organizations. Between 2017 and 2023, funding for Chicago’s community violence intervention programs grew 15 times faster than the police department’s budget.

The fix requires conservative commonsense: empower police, audit expenditures, prosecute fraud. Trump’s Operation Legend expansion and Byrne JAG grant conditions produce results Chicago ignores. Real peace flows from strong policing, family values, and genuine opportunity – not handouts to hustlers exploiting violence for profit.
