Trump 'Not Even a Little Bit' Worried About Impeachment by Democrats

President Trump said Wednesday he is “not even a little bit” concerned that Democrats will try to impeach him after they won control of both the House and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to video of his remarks posted by CBS News and C-SPAN.

Trump made the comments to reporters at the White House after a ceremony at the construction site of his new White House ballroom, The New Republic reported. It was his first extended exchange with the press since the results came in, according to Anadolu Agency.

“No, no, no, not even a little bit,” Trump said when asked whether he was worried about Democrats pursuing impeachment, according to Anadolu. He argued the move would backfire on Democrats, saying it “would be impeachment for no reason. For what? For having a successful country?”

Trump gave the Washington Examiner nearly the same answer when its reporter asked whether he had any concern about impeachment proceedings in the new Congress. “Our country is more successful now than at any time in its history,” he told the outlet.

A Third Impeachment Fight?

Trump could face a third impeachment effort once the new Democratic majorities are sworn in next year. The Washington Examiner noted that Democrats picked up sizable majorities in both chambers in the midterms.

The House impeached Trump twice during his first term, and the Senate acquitted him both times. A conviction requires a two-thirds vote of the Senate, a bar no president has ever been removed under.

Trump also signaled he is ready to work with the incoming majorities, within limits. “I’ll get along probably with the Democrats unless they want to be destructive, but I have the power of the veto,” he said, according to Anadolu Agency.

‘If I Were on the Ballot’

Asked whether he had regrets about how he closed out the campaign, which included dozens of rallies for Republican candidates, Trump said no, according to The New Republic. “Look, if I were on the ballot we would’ve won,” he said, adding that the rallies were packed but “we weren’t able to transfer the love to candidates,” the outlet reported.

The New Republic reported that Trump also said he would have “done nothing different” on the Iran war, which he acknowledged had hurt Republicans at the polls. He also told reporters that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s job is safe, according to the same report.

What Comes Next

For now, Republicans still hold both chambers through the lame-duck session, and the new Congress will not take office until January. Whether Democrats move toward impeachment or stick to oversight hearings will be one of the first tests for their new leadership, and Trump made clear Wednesday that he believes the political risk falls on them, not him.

Supporters of the president argue that a party fresh off a midterm win would squander its mandate by reopening impeachment fights that failed twice before. Democrats have not announced any formal impeachment plans.
