FBI Searches Swalwell Donor's Beverly Hills Mansion in Federal Probe

FBI agents executed a federal search warrant Tuesday morning at the Beverly Hills mansion of billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a onetime major backer of former Rep. Eric Swalwell, according to an FBI spokesperson quoted by NBC Los Angeles and ABC7. KABC-TV reported the search is related to the federal investigation into Swalwell, and Fox News reported the raid was carried out in connection with that probe.

The FBI confirmed the search but said the court documents remain sealed, ABC7 reported. FBI sources told NBC Los Angeles that no arrests were expected at the location on Tuesday.

According to ABC7, the activity unfolded on North Roxbury Drive near Benedict Canyon Drive at about 7 a.m. local time. Fox News reported that at least two dozen agents took part and searched the property for several hours, and that several people were brought out of the house in handcuffs but were released soon after. Fox News also reported that Cloobeck was not at the home at the time.

Video from outside the home showed several FBI agents and yellow caution tape in front of the property, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The Swalwell connection

Swalwell, a California Democrat, ended his campaign for governor and resigned from Congress earlier this year after multiple women accused him of misconduct, according to ABC7. He has denied the allegations, the outlet reported.

Cloobeck, a former California gubernatorial candidate, supported Swalwell’s run for governor, according to NBC Los Angeles. ABC7 reported that Swalwell stayed with Cloobeck at some point earlier this year, and that Cloobeck said he kicked Swalwell out after the allegations surfaced. NBC Los Angeles reported that Cloobeck withdrew his support for Swalwell in April.

Tuesday’s search is not the first in the case. In August, the FBI searched Swalwell’s Washington, D.C., home and seized an electronic device, according to an official familiar with the matter cited by NBC Los Angeles. The FBI also executed a search warrant and took Swalwell’s electronic devices that same month at San Francisco International Airport, NBC Los Angeles reported. Fox News reported Swalwell was not arrested or detained during that operation.

A separate case against Cloobeck

Cloobeck faces his own legal trouble. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged him in April with three felony counts of attempting to dissuade a witness and one misdemeanor count of making annoying telephone calls, according to the criminal complaint cited by NBC Los Angeles. Law enforcement sources told the station the alleged targets were witnesses or victims in the prosecution of Cloobeck’s fiancee.

NBC Los Angeles noted it was not immediately clear whether Tuesday’s warrant was tied to that matter or to the Swalwell case, while KABC and Fox News reported the search was linked to the Swalwell investigation.

What we don’t know

The warrant affidavit is sealed, so the government has not said what agents were looking for or what, if anything, they took. No new charges have been announced against Swalwell or Cloobeck in connection with Tuesday’s search, and both men are presumed innocent. Swalwell has denied wrongdoing.
