Trump Tells Bill Maher 'Don't Call Anymore' in 1,300-Word Post

President Donald Trump publicly cut ties with comedian Bill Maher on Sunday night, calling the HBO host a “COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER” in a Truth Social post that ran more than 1,300 words, according to Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

The post came just days after Maher’s second dinner at the White House, Variety reported, and nine days after Trump had praised their “great dinner,” according to Deadline. “Bill: Don’t call anymore. It’s useless,” Trump wrote, according to Deadline.

Deadline reported that Trump appeared to be set off by Maher’s Friday episode of “Real Time,” including the host’s references to the president’s low approval numbers. In the post, Trump wrote that Maher was “Using Fake Polls” when he said Trump had his “Lowest Ratings so far” and was losing Republican support.

Trump answers with CNN’s own numbers

Trump pushed back by citing CNN. He wrote in the post that “CNN just came out with a Poll showing that I’m at 98 and 99% support within the Republican Party,” and that CNN’s Harry Enten had called him “The Most Influential President of the Last Century.” He added that these were “CNN Polls, people not exactly in love with me.”

Trump also took aim at Maher’s view on Iran. “He doesn’t think it was a good thing to take the Nuclear Weapon away from Iran, which shows you that he is not very smart,” Trump wrote.

The dinner, in Trump’s telling

Much of the post walked through how the meetings came about. Trump wrote that Maher’s business associate Chuck LaBella and Kid Rock “called me incessantly” about a meeting, and that his first response was, “Fellas, this guy’s a Goofball.” He wrote that Maher “invited himself to the White House” and was “very nervous” at their first dinner.

According to Variety, Trump said the most recent dinner was also attended by Stephen A. Smith and Kid Rock. Trump alleged that Maher was drunk and had a drink in hand while touring the White House, called him a “major POTHEAD,” and said he “looked like hell this time,” Variety reported.

Trump also disputed Maher’s account of how long the evening lasted. “It didn’t last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy,” Trump wrote, according to Variety. “We have the timestamps. I learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time.”

Trump said he never agreed to appear on Maher’s program and never will. Maher wants him on the show “DESPARATELY,” Trump wrote, adding: “It won’t happen!” He also called “Real Time” a “Low Rated Show” on “equally Low Rated HBO,” and questioned what “Laughter Machine” the show uses.

A short-lived truce

The blowup ends an unusual stretch of détente between Trump and one of television’s best-known liberal comedians. Maher had described both White House visits on his show, mixing praise for how the president treated him with criticism of his record, according to Deadline. Newsweek reported that Trump had hosted Maher twice at the White House before telling him not to seek another meeting.

Maher had not publicly responded to the post as of Monday morning.
