Feds Collected Omar Family DNA From Trash Before DC Raid

Federal Agents Collected DNA From Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Family Trash Before Washington Home Raid, NewsNation Reports

Federal investigators retrieved DNA samples from discarded trash belonging to Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her family members before conducting a widely publicized search of her Washington residence earlier this week, according to a NewsNation report citing multiple sources familiar with the investigation.

The DNA collection method, commonly referred to as dumpster diving, allowed agents to obtain genetic material without securing a search warrant once the items were placed in public trash collection. The technique has been used in high-profile criminal cases including the University of Idaho student murders and the decades-long hunt for the Gilgo Beach suspect, who was identified through a discarded pizza box.

NewsNation reported that the investigation extends well beyond previously known allegations that Omar married a sibling to facilitate immigration fraud or falsified her birth year to enter the country as a minor. Sources described the forthcoming indictments as stunning in nature and far beyond anything the public has understood the case to be about.

The probe now involves additional family members and has moved to a grand jury process expected to continue well after the upcoming election. Monday’s search of Omar’s D.C. residence was the most visible of more than a dozen simultaneous operations carried out across multiple locations, according to the report.

Investigators are operating from the Minneapolis office of Homeland Security Investigations, suggesting the case centers on activities tied to Minnesota rather than Washington. The state is home to one of the nation’s largest Somali-American populations and has been the site of extensive fraud investigations involving Somali communities, with losses reaching into the billions of dollars.

The Justice Department opened the Omar investigation during the Biden administration but later closed it. Parts of that inquiry were then reopened and expanded under the current administration.

Omar has characterized the federal actions as politically motivated. In a recent social media post, she stated that the current administration has targeted her since she arrived in Congress and that she will continue to oppose those efforts.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin disputed that characterization in remarks made to media. Mullin stated that the department would not move forward unless the evidence established a non-political basis. He described the investigation as focused on enforcing immigration and related laws and called it a strong case.

The DNA collection method sidesteps the need for probable cause once materials are discarded in public trash. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly relied on the technique in cases where traditional search warrants would alert subjects to an ongoing investigation.

The scope and scale of the operation underscore a renewed federal commitment to examining long-standing concerns in communities where prior fraud cases have involved significant public resources. The simultaneous nature of the raids signals that investigators are treating the matter as a network of activities rather than isolated individual conduct.

Omar represents Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District and has been a member of Congress since 2019. She is currently running for reelection.

The grand jury investigation is ongoing, and no indictments have been publicly announced.
