For years, the city has thrown billions at homelessness with little to show for it. Since 2022, Los Angeles has directed roughly $4.4 billion toward the problem, yet official counts show the homeless population going up, not down. Now we know part of the reason: fraud.
Federal prosecutors have indicted three people for schemes that skimmed millions from grants meant for homeless services. Michael Young is accused of diverting around $7 million through a network of shell companies and fraudulent billing. The money allegedly went to luxury vacations, high-end cars, designer clothes, a nightclub, and a bingo hall. Donya Mitchell allegedly used grant money to cover personal bail expenses. The complaint details a deliberate effort to siphon public money away from its intended purpose.
The homeless were not the only ones ignored. Accountability was also in short supply. The Democrat-controlled Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has refused to give extra resources to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, an agency that manages up to a billion dollars a year. Even for the county’s own board, the money was too big and too unaccountable to keep pouring in without results. But Bass did not have that same discipline.
When the federal hammer fell, she blamed Washington instead of the fraudsters. That is the tell. A mayor who cared about results would be demanding prosecution and reform. Instead, she skipped a scheduled event addressing the fraud indictments. She would not face the cameras. She would not face the public. She just blamed the feds.
The Trump administration did not cut funding to punish the homeless. It cut funding to stop the bleeding. The city has proven it cannot protect taxpayer money, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has finally said enough. This is not about politics; it is about basic stewardship.

The fraudsters are being prosecuted. The mayor is still collecting her salary and pointing fingers. That is the real scandal. Voters should ask one question: if Washington is the problem, why did the mayor spend billions and still have more people on the street?
