CNN Panel Melts Down When Scott Jennings Asks About Corporate Income Taxes
CNN’s liberal panel got a live lesson in basic economics Thursday night, and host Abby Phillip had no answer. Scott Jennings, the network’s lone conservative voice on the panel, systematically trapped Phillip and her guests over their refusal to treat all taxes the same way.
The exchange started when Jennings asked a simple question. If tariffs are so terrible because they drive up costs for consumers, why won’t anyone on the left agree to trade them for a complete elimination of corporate income taxes?

No one would take the deal.
Jennings framed the question directly. If you’re so upset about tariffs as taxes being depressive of economic activity, would you trade all the tariffs for a zeroing out of corporate income taxes? He knew the answer before he finished the sentence. The panel would say no.
Why are certain taxes good and certain taxes bad? Because Trump did one and you want to do the other.
The panel resisted the equivalence. Phillip interjected repeatedly with ‘Hold on a second. No. No. No.’ She insisted tariffs raise prices on goods in a way income taxes do not. That is where Jennings pounced.
You say taxes on corporations that are in the form of tariffs are passed on to consumers. Where do you think corporate income taxes go? Onto consumers.
The Truth the Left Cannot Admit
That is the whole ballgame. Corporate income taxes are not paid by corporations at all. They are paid by workers through lower wages and consumers through higher prices. Every serious economist knows this. The left pretends not to know it because corporate taxes let them raise revenue while claiming they are taxing the rich. It is a lie wrapped in a policy paper.
Jennings pressed further. They’re both bad. So let’s zero it out.
The panel panicked. Phillip said she does not think the two taxes are the same. Jennings shot back instantly. They’re all taxes. You just said they’re all taxes. They are not both the same. Why? Because tariffs, it’s a tax. You said it was a tax.
The CNN host then tried to argue that income taxes do not raise the price of goods. Jennings responded with an image no one on set could answer.
If you were the Abby Phillip Corporation and I taxed you, you’d pass it on to your products. Income taxes do not raise prices on goods. Oh my goodness. Abby. Tariffs do. A tax is a tax is a tax.
That is the entire conservative case in one exchange. The left wants to use tariffs to fund the government and then pretend that revenue comes from nowhere. But tariffs and corporate income taxes are both costs imposed on producers. Those costs get passed along. Always. The only difference is who politicians can blame.
Selective Outrage Is the Point
Jennings also nailed the political motive behind the double standard. Every Democrat will run for president on an increase in corporate income taxes after arguing against tariffs. That is the point. They do not want a consistent economic philosophy. They want a weapon against Donald Trump.
He even predicted that Republican senators from border states like Maine and Michigan will distance themselves from broad tariff support because local voters buying goods from Canada feel the cost directly. That is the difference. The left feels nothing because they are never forced to explain their own tax increases.
The CNN segment exposed what conservative viewers have known for years. Liberal media hosts are not interested in economic truth. They are interested in defense of their party’s talking points. When Scott Jennings asked the panel to accept the logical consequence of their own argument, they refused.
Not because the logic was wrong. Because accepting it would mean admitting that every dollar Washington takes comes from someone’s pocket.
They cannot say that out loud. So they say no, no, no, and hope the clip goes away. It will not.
